Sanctum Boutique Apartments, c. 1855

Sleeps 8 | Bedrooms 4 | Bathrooms 3

In the heart of Hobart, Sanctum Boutique Apartments offers two accommodation options, Sussex House and The Forge. Both are beautifully renovated, heritage-listed buildings dating to the mid-1800s.

Sussex House is a handsome two storey Georgian sandstone cottage with a wonderful story. In the early 1900s, George Thwaites, a returned soldier, purchased the property and ran a wood merchant business from there. His business transported wood for fires & cooking stoves to surrounding Hobart households on a horse-drawn dray. Sussex House was named after George Thwaites’ first home in Sussex, England.

Lovely period detail features throughout Sussex House, including sash windows, high ceilings, and original fireplace, staircase & doors. Accommodating up to six guests (with portacot if needed), there are three generous bedrooms - two queen rooms on the ground floor, and a king bed upstairs that can be split into single beds, all fitted with sumptuous linens. Two modern bathrooms have luxurious, fluffy towels and complimentary amenities, and the upstairs bathroom has a deep freestanding bath, with views out across the historic streetscape.

In the large lounge room, relax on leather Chesterfield sofas in front of the fireplace with local Tassie wine & cheese from Hill Street Grocer, and catch a movie on Netflix. Free WiFi is also included, in case you need to catch up on work…or take a break from technology & choose from the range of fiction & non-fiction books provided for guests. The modern kitchen is fully equipped so you can cook your favourite meals. In the kitchen, you’ll find a selection of teas & Nespresso coffee pods, milk, sugar, olive oil, salt & pepper. Guests also receive complimentary chocolates upon arrival. And with a washing machine & dryer, Sussex House is perfect for longer stays in Hobart.

The Forge accommodation was originally a laundry/kitchen, workshop and horse/tack shed. From the late 1800s, the current adjacent carpark operated as a wood yard. George Thwaites’ horse & dray were stored in these buildings to the rear of Sussex House. Horses were also re-shod here, leading to this accommodation being aptly named ‘The Forge’.

With its original rough-hewn sandstone facade, The Forge has been carefully converted into cosy queen bed studio accommodation, with fully-equipped modern kitchenette and dining area. The bathroom has a large light-filled shower bay with beautiful rooftop skylight. Complimentary WiFi is also included. With its rustic exposed stone walls, The Forge is a slice of Hobart history and a quiet, cosy abode, tucked away in Hobart’s CBD.

Outside is a private courtyard for guests, with upturned wine barrel table & outdoor stools, screened by rustic stainless steel fencing and established green hedges. It’s a little sanctuary in Hobart’s CBD, where you can enjoy a BBQ or drink at the end of the day.
