Wiltshire House was built in 1880, at a time when Maldon was continuing to thrive as a bustling mining town, the area known for its gold and quartz. Four years later, in 1884, the Maldon to Castlemaine steam railway was opened - a momentous engineering feat, and an important moment in Maldon’s history. Directly behind Wiltshire House’s lovely cottage gardens sits the historic terminus of the Victorian Goldfields Railway. Twice a week, steam trains continue to run between Maldon and Castlemaine. The puffing & whistles truly take you back in time - the same sounds the original owners of Wiltshire House would have been so excited to hear!

Wiltshire House recently underwent a painstaking restoration, and the end result is an elegant, fully self-contained holiday home for adults, just a stroll to Maldon’s main street. The house has been furnished with elegant antiques from around the world, particularly French and English antiques, and original artwork. The home is rich in period detail, featuring high ceilings, original floors, windows & doors, wood-lined ceilings, decorative cornice, cast iron lacework & brick chimneys.

There are three bedrooms sleeping up to six guests - one with queen bed, another with double bed, and the third bedroom has two king singles. Ornate antique wood beds are fitted with crisp, luxurious bed linens for a dreamy night’s sleep. Two light-filled, modern bathrooms have rainwater showers; and with full laundry facilities and high speed WiFi, why not extend your stay, and combine work with an escape to the country.

The stylish kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals, and French doors open up onto a sunny alfresco dining area. A cosy sitting room has a comfortable lounge, well-stocked bookcase for your enjoyment, and leads out onto a paved area shaded by grapevines, the perfect place to relax with an evening wine or morning coffee.

To the rear, a large cottage garden awaits, with lawned area and established perfumed roses, annuals and perennials. In springtime, the garden comes alive with blossom trees, daffodils and tulips. Two magnificent lemon-scented gums are spot lit at night, and stand guard at the back gate leading to Maldon Railway Station. There’s even an original outdoor toilet structure that remains, lined with original local newspapers from the 1860s!

One of Maldon’s finest historic stays, come and enjoy this luxurious, restful country retreat, and soak up the historic ambiance of Wiltshire House & the charming township of Maldon.
