In 1852, gold was discovered at Spring Creek, Beechworth, and during the following year, thousands flocked to the area to try their luck at striking it rich. It was during these early years that French Cottage was built in 1854, a heritage stone home that has now been fully renovated to offer luxury, self-contained accommodation.
Hosts Andrew and Jackie Beer have transformed this former residence into a luxury escape, with a romantic, French provincial feel. Each room is bright and airy with a refined simplicity; tastefully decorated with elegant furniture, antique pieces and artwork.
Three beautifully-appointed, light-filled bedrooms each have comfortable queen size beds, dressed with quality linen. French Cottage welcomes couples, families or small groups of up to six guests. Wake to the sound of birds, open the French doors that lead onto the verandah and let the sunlight stream in.
The cottage is suited to all seasons, with hydronic heating throughout during winter, and in summer, air-conditioning and large, wrap around verandahs to keep you cool. The vine-covered verandahs are also a lovely spot for coffee & breakfast in the morning…to sit back with a good book in the afternoon…or relax of an evening with a glass of wine, overlooking the garden.
There are two bathrooms with complimentary amenities, and a laundry room, making the cottage perfect for longer stays. The fully-equipped, modern kitchen will entice you to cook up a storm - enjoy dining at the country farmhouse table, or alfresco in the beautiful, French-inspired private garden with outdoor setting.
The garden space is also available for intimate private gatherings and events, including small weddings. Guests can stay at French Cottage, as well as her sister cottage, Ned Kelly’s Marlo Cottage which is close by.
French Cottage is located in a quiet spot, close to Lake Sambell. There is plenty of off-street parking and storage space for bikes and kayaks. The main streets of historic Beechworth, with its boutique shops, wine bars, restaurants and cafes are just a short stroll away.

Beechworth is Victoria’s best-preserved gold mining town, with 32 of its buildings listed by the National Trust. The town is steeped in history, with lots to do right in the heart of town, in the Beechworth Historic Precinct. Old Beechworth Gaol c.1859, where Ned Kelly spent time, runs daily tours. The Courthouse, now a living history museum, is a remarkable sandstone building with its atmospheric court room. Surrounding Beechworth there are many walks, bike trails, and places to picnic, including the spectacular Woolshed Falls. Foodies will love Beechworth’s locally made products - visit the Beechworth Honey shop and Billson’s Brewery, still operating in a gorgeous red brick building built in the 1870s.
