The Hive Apartment, 1857

History

Taking pride of place in the heart of Beechworth, this heritage-listed building is one of the oldest bank buildings in Victoria, and reflects the town’s rapid development since the discovery of gold in 1852.

Designed by architects Robertson and Hale, it opened its doors on the 2nd of January, 1857 as the Bank of New South Wales. Held in the banking industry for over 140 years, it was then sold privately in 2001. Many original features still remain, including the front facade, most windows facing the street, the solid iron entry gates and iron bars on the ground level windows, and granite rock wall.

During the gold rush, bullion was displayed in the windows of the bank on weekends, drawing crowds of admirers. Today, the building is owned by Beechworth Honey, representing a fitting connection between solid and liquid gold. Founded by Benjamin Robinson, he spent his early years as a gold miner, hoping to strike it rich - but with no luck, turned his hand to beekeeping. Today, Jodie Goldsworthy, Benjamin’s great granddaughter, along with her husband Steve both co-own the business.
