History
The Bowmont, in the quaint township of Franklin on the banks of the Huon River, is a heritage-listed building with a fascinating history. Built in 1906 by renowned builders J. Dunn & Son, the Federation Free-style design is typical of the builder’s work, examples of which can still be found throughout many parts of Hobart.
A much loved building in the Huon Valley, The Bowmont has been a local institution for over a century, serving many purposes during its life. Initially a commercial bank, it was then a general hospital with over 3,000 ‘Bowmont babies’ delivered in the now-kitchen. In more recent times, the building was used as a community centre, recruitment agency and offices, then an antique store.
Current custodians Michelle Crawford and Leo are slowly reimagining The Bowmont, employing traditional methods that cherish and preserve its rich history. The first floor, formally the bank manager’s residence, has been recreated as artfully-styled two bedroom apartment accommodation. Downstairs, there’s also a studio for creative workshops and photoshoots, and to the rear of the building is Michelle and Leo’s family home, along with a small kitchen garden.
The Bowmont retains many of its original architectural features, including soaring ceilings and impressive tall windows, several open fireplaces, and central blackwood staircase. William Morris ‘Willow Boughs’ wallpaper lines the hallway - a nod to the river outside, as well as the Arts & Craft movement, of which the building's architect, Bernard Walker was an ardent admirer.
If you would like to see and learn more about the building during your stay, Michelle is happy to give you a tour of the ground floor, including the old safe now converted to the pantry room, the original banking chamber, and bank manager’s office.
Accommodation
Ascend the grand heritage-listed blackwood staircase to the first floor, which is exclusively yours to enjoy. Perfect for one or two couples, a luxurious solo trip, or a weekend away with friends, there are two spacious queen bedrooms furnished with beautiful vintage and antique finds, and beds are dressed with the softest French and Belgian linen sheets. Wake slowly to tranquil water views out the window, make yourself a coffee and curl up on the cosy bespoke window seat, watching the Huon River come alive.
Unwind in the cosy sitting room with leather sofa - there’s no TV, but WiFi is available should you need. We suggest disconnecting from technology, though, and while away the hours reading, play a game of backgammon, or rediscovering your creative side. Spend a quiet afternoon writing, or painting the postcard-perfect landscape out your window - art supplies are provided for guests.
Relax in the book room, a moody, intimate space with vintage leather armchairs, small writing desk, and a curated collection of books. Gin and mixers are also provided, if you fancy settling back with a G&T after a day exploring the region.
Swathed in a divine custom heritage green, the eat-in kitchen features locally handcrafted Tasmanian Oak cabinetry. Breakfast provisions of homemade jam and sourdough bread are included, along with premium freshly-roasted coffee for French press or moka pot, and a range of loose leaf teas. Pick up your provisions in Hobart or Huonville en route to The Bowmont, then there’s no need to leave Franklin during your stay.
Utterly romantic, the bathroom features a large walk-in shower with handmade Moroccan tiles, lime-washed walls, and a luxuriously deep soaking bath, along with underfloor heating and Australian-made Salus Body products.
On your doorstep is the expansive Huon River waterfront, with several picnic spots, nature walks and jetties. Head to the local bakery and delicatessen for delicious locally-made treats, and savour while watching sail boats drift by.
The Bowmont offers guests a quiet sanctuary, a place to switch off, unwind, and rejuvenate. A word of warning, though - once you enter through the front doors, you may never want to leave.

Things To Do
Picturesque Franklin has a long tradition of boat building, which is still alive and well today. Visit the Wooden Boat Centre, Australia's premier boat building school, dedicated to preserving the traditional craft of wooden boat building, and take a stroll along the maritime precinct. Also allow time to complete the Franklin History walk that takes you past the town’s heritage-listed buildings and gardens, many with heirloom fruit trees.
The Palais Theatre, built in 1911, is a charming example of Federation-style architecture and hosts a range of events, including the Franklin Market, held on the fourth Sunday of each month, and screenings of classic movies on the first Sunday of the month. And if you’d like to eat out, Italian-influenced Osteria at Petty Sessions prides itself on its homemade pasta, there’s a cafe, and Fish & Chippery, perfect for a casual sunset dinner by the water.
The Huon Valley’s rich apple-growing heritage lives on in nearby cideries and roadside fruit stands selling fresh local apples, pears and other fresh local produce. Visit Franks Cider, and explore the grounds behind St John's Church, built in 1830s. If you’re feeling energetic, a brisk walk along quiet lanes up to the hills behind Franklin rewards with breathtaking views of the township and river below.
