The Albert Hotel, 1886

History
A testament to the enduring elegance and grandeur of late Victorian architecture, The Albert is one of two near-identical homes, built in 1886 by Newtown carriage builders James and John Kearey as their private residences. Designed by renowned architects Sheerin & Hennessy, The Albert was originally named ‘Telopea’.
The building’s impressive heritage details - from the elaborate lacework, ornate fireplaces and cornicework, tessellated tiles, and stunning leadlight - reflect a prosperous time in Sydney’s history. Entrepreneurs such as the Keareys flourished during this transformative era, which saw the rise of industrial progress and cultural sophistication.

In the early 2000s, the building had been used as an office space and was rundown. Iron lace balconies had been enclosed with weatherboard, and the building was in dire need of restoration. In 2018, Jean Claude Branch, along with Madewell Constructions and Smith and Tzannes architects, commenced a significant two year project to return the building to its 1886 grandeur, carefully preserving original heritage features throughout.
After a challenging start - opening in February 2020, just a week prior to COVID lockdowns - The Albert partnered with Emerald City Hotels, and is now a much-loved boutique hotel, with a blend of historic charm and modern luxury. Family-owned and operated, The Albert is committed to supporting local vintners, farmers, and creators, to provide guests with an authentic Australian experience.
