History

Situated in the heart of Richmond, this stately Victorian terrace house is testament to the rapid growth of inner city Melbourne in the late 19th century. One of Melbourne’s oldest suburbs, Richmond has a colourful and tapestried history, intricately woven into the fabric of the Victorian era.

The gold rush period transformed Richmond, attracting a large immigrant population, notably Irish settlers. It became a bustling industrial hub, dominated by textile mills, breweries, and brickworks. However despite its economic growth, Richmond grappled with significant social challenges, including poverty and overcrowding, mirroring the social divisions of Victorian society. This division also formed the basis of the Richmond’s early architectural landscape: from the grand Italianate houses on ‘Richmond Hill’, to the rows of tiny single-storey worker’s cottages that filled the surrounding flatlands towards the Yarra River.

Retaining beautiful heritage detail, Mrs. Stanley is well-known in Richmond as the ‘butterfly house’, with its creative butterfly-shaped wrought iron entry gates. With magnificent internal arches at the entry way, high ceilings, ornate cornices, ornamental fireplaces, polished floors and central cedar staircase, Mrs. Stanley captures the elegance of late Victorian architecture, with a deep sense of history resonating in every room.

Tastefully furnished and beautifully restored Victorian terrace so full of character. High quality and super comfortable bedding. Loved the paved courtyard area with wood heater. It was the perfect location in terms of walkability & public transport to major sports venues and the CBD. Fabulous cafes, pubs and restaurants within a few minutes’ walk. And dog friendly!
