Lythgo's Row Colonial Cottages, c. 1845

Sleeps 2 | Bedrooms 1 | Bathrooms 1

Lythgo’s Row is a beautifully preserved, heritage-listed building with a fascinating past. When William Lythgo, a convict, arrived into Van Diemen’s Land in 1836 after being sentenced to 14 years for pick-pocketing, it was an opportunity to create a new life. After he was granted his ticket-of-leave, in a twist of irony, he become a police officer and was stationed at Pontville, outside Hobart.

The Pontville Bridge next to Lythgo’s Row was completed in 1842. It was built from sandstone quarried from the site on which Lythgo’s Row now sits. William Lythgo saw the site as ideal for a residence and business, and began building ‘Lythgo’s Stores’ in 1845. There was a butcher’s, blacksmith and general store; and the cottages were built as workers cottages. Lythgo’s Row is a beautiful and important example of Tasmania’s early Georgian colonial architecture.

These truly unique, charming cottages have been recently renovated to provide modern comforts, whilst preserving the building’s historic atmosphere. Offering self-contained accommodation for couples, each upstairs bedroom has a luxurious king size pillow-top bed dressed with fine white linens, and complimentary soft white fluffy robes and slippers. Bathrooms have large walk-in showers with premium amenities, and in each kitchenette - with gorgeous original cast iron stove - there’s a welcome basket of local artisan treats & continental breakfast provisions. For your morning coffee, a Lavazza coffee machine with complimentary pods is also provided.

Each cosy living room has an original fireplace with stone surround, comfortable lounge, smart TV, and complimentary WiFi. Sink into an armchair in front of the fire with a glass Tasmania’s finest, and reflect on who may have lived in the cottage back in the 19th century. You’ll love the period detail throughout each cottage - exposed sandstone walls, colourful leadlight windows, fireplaces and original windows and doors. Reminiscent of a stay in the English countryside, each cottage has its own gorgeous entry with roses, hedges, and stairs worn over time by many footsteps.

Hosts Lawrence and Susan generous, thoughtful, and happy to share the history of their property. Your pet can also be accommodated upon request. They also offer a personalised tour service, Lythgo’s Row Bespoke Tours, and can arrange a private tour to suit your palate - whisking you away to visit wineries, cider houses, distilleries, local cheese and chocolate makers. The nearby Jordan River Trail is a historic heritage walk that takes you past the Pontville Historic Precinct, dating to the 1820s, with many heritage-listed buildings. From Lythgo’s Row, stroll to The Crown Inn - built in 1835 of local stone - for an old-fashioned pub meal.
