History

The land upon which Elgin House sits was granted to George Augustus Robinson (1791–1866). Arriving into Hobart Town in January 1824 and working as a builder, he quickly established a successful business, employing several men within a year. Robinson was involved in philanthropic work, including visiting prisoners in gaol, and helped to found the Mechanics' Institute.

Owner and host Gary Bashford recently completed a renovation of the home, carefully preserving all heritage features. With historic charm throughout, step inside through the beautiful grand Victorian front door with ornate ruby glass. Internally, there are original cornices and ceiling rosettes along with the original fireplace, and all door handles and locks have been lovingly restored.

Accommodation

Elgin House is the perfect escape for couples or solo travellers. The king bedroom is fitted with luxurious French linens, as well as a French linen headboard by Hale Mercantile. A stunning chandelier provides a romantic soft glow, and plush velvet chaise lounge adds to the opulence of the room.

If required, there is a comfortable sofa bed in the sunroom for an additional two guests, with a custom-made barn door that creates total privacy. A cot is also available upon request.

The bathroom has been designed for pure relaxation, with shower and a huge spa bath, coupled with complimentary bath salts, Sukin eco-friendly products, heated towel rails, and cosy underfloor heating. The double hung window with its original stone window sill, allows you to serve a glass of wine to your loved one while they bathe!

After a day exploring Hobart, relax in front of the lounge room’s fireplace with a complimentary glass of port or cocktail, and curl up to watch your favourite shows on Netflix. Elgin House is also an ideal workation, with a beautiful antique writing desk and WiFi.

The modern kitchenette features a two-plate cooktop, microwave, rice cooker, and is well-stocked with pantry essentials, condiments, fresh coffee. You’ll find a bottle of Tasmanian bubbly and port waiting for you on the drinks trolley. And for longer stays in Hobart, there’s a washing machine/dryer for your convenience.
